K.D. Lang's lament
"You can only imagine how much it costs to tour, with a bus and a truck and band members and crew members. The overhead is incredible. I think people
need music in hard times, but I don't know how to respond to it. I also have to balance the books, too, you know. We didn't know it was going to hit
us. . . . We're kind of stuck. The promoters are stuck; I'm stuck with the same overhead."
-- K.D. Lang, who performed a nearly soldout show at Centennial Hall on Wednesday.

Waah, damn this economy! If kd's starting to feel the pinch, who knows? Maybe she'll have to finish up her tour quicker than she'd wanted to

No Fruitcake, it does not sound good at all. Especially as k.d. is not I feel, the complaining type at all... Strange though but hearing from
all possible media sources about the financial crisis, I was thinking about her the other day and worried that she may be affected in a way or another. I had
decided that it was improbable and then today, this!
I always had an idea that she was well-off of course but far less rich than some may think her. Poor k.d. the last thing we want for her is
money problem.

p.s. I seem to have a problem with this computer this morning . It is incredibly slow and something seems wrong.

chantal, it's not your computer.
msn is playing games.
patience is called for.
yet again.
regarding kd's financial situation, there was a time, by her own admission, that she paid less
attention than she might have done and than was wise to these sorts of things. clearly the misappropriation of her funds by her former business manager
served as a harsh wake-up call. and now with money matters being discussed everywhere one turns, she is obviously taking heed.
at one point she said that her primary goal in working was to take care of her mother. we know, too,
that the support of ari bhod is another priority. and, yes, sadly she apparently has never made the kind of money some entertainers do.
i do worry for her, as i know she would like to keep singing publicly for decades more.
please may that be possible!

I guess no one's exempt!
Maybe Jamie will have to go back to practicing law to help make ends meet! In tough economic times, people tend to become more litigious! Buddhist
philanthropy doesn't pay well. LOL
Or maybe k.d. could tour solo, unplugged and seated, so to speak! I could get behind that!!! Less overhead.
Or maybe k.d. will have to record more often!

I just hope she doesn't stop shopping at Whole Foods. I need job security. LOL

I know that money isn't everything but then again we all need it to live and to do those things which please us most. To try and gauge how a tour is
going to go must be like walking a bit of a tightrope. A great deal is to do with promotion and plenty of radio play ....which unfortunately for some unknown
reason k d never seems to have on her side. It really baffles me why, when the radio is so full of junk, pure artistry of such an amazing voice never gets any
air play..........or is this just me rambling.........again. Caz x

No Caz you are never rambling just pure fun most times ( that is, the part I understand). The fact that she is not heard often on radio baffles me really. A
mystery in fact. What is
wrong? And she said herself a long time ago though, that the trick to make money in the business was to get radio airplay...

ps I have just written to Terry Wogan at BBC Radio 2 to ask if he would feature kd as an artist of the week. The five songs listed: Hallelujah, Outside
Myself, Theme from the Valley of the Dolls, Close Your Eyes and Coming Home.....I wont hold my breath though but it's worth a shot. Caz x

Well Done Caz!! Terry will restore my faith in radio DJs if he promotes kd- and I would have picked those same songs too!!! It really sucks to think that
the pure effort kd has put into touring this year would not leave her suitably rewarded- whilst it does not appear to be her main motivator- she's the
same as us all- we gotta pay the bills.
With Watershed in mind- surely if she saved the record company the costs of a producer, studio time and extra musicians - please someone tell me she may have
negotiated an enhanced deal on the sales??? I am so commercially naive about these things- does it work this way?????/
Puzzled Pat?????

hi puzzled pat (lol)
not sure myself how this works, but it may be that the artist would pay for studio time, producer etc.? i suppose it does depend on the negotiated deal and
label.....

Hi Pat.....long time no hear!............Yeah.... I know kd may have done a good few local radio spots when touring here but artists do need to get the
national radio spots as well. It can be argued that with all the emotion and effort kd puts into her performances it leaves very little time to travel to
London and cover that mainstream publicity thing. But surely in this day of modern technology , an online or recorded interview could have been
done...........................or did I blink and miss something! Caz x

I did hear kd say somewhere that 50% of her time was her music, 20% the Tools for Peace and the rest for her buddhism............and I cannot remember
which interview that was. Caz x

Thanks Caz for that info. Precious as always and telling also...
And you did well regarding the BBC program. Very good to notice and complain but all that energy works best if directed to the people concerned in the first
place. On a totally different matter, I wrote to Direct Management about a dvd version of Live in Sydney. And about an update on her career 'Harvest of
Seven Years' style. She told a French reporter for ' La Dixième Muse ' some months ago as she (the reporter, excuse my upside down English) asked
her the same question that they did have a lot of footage from recent years and so it could be done eventually. Let's keep our fingers crossed or uncross
them to put a little pressure where it it needed rather; namely to Direct Management I think

Reposting for Bep
From: bep (Original Message) Sent: 13/11/2008 22:37
I'm really concerned here. I cant access any pages on this site. I receive some emails. Those emails are the only things giving me information. Because l only receive some, l'm not getting the full story. I sincerely hope that all the touring of the past year or more that kd & her band of merry helpers are'nt being hit hard by all this. kd has been given a special gift & she uses it to share for the world to hear. kd does a lot for charity. I doubt kd would even begin to consider giving up singing. This is her life. My personal opinion, kd would sing for free if she had to. Just being able to sing & for her to see the sheer joy & pleasure she gives to the audience through the beauty of her voice would give her so much joy, happiness & peace. Kd would NEVER give up singing. I wish you all the best kd. YOU will sing to your last breath, for this is your LIFE. THANK YOU for the endless hours of pleasure you give me each day when l turn my mp3 player on. I never tire of hearing your voice. |

Thanks for reposting this kfs,
It is what I call a vibrant tribute direct from your heart and filled with emotions we can all relate to Bep. And like you, I think it very unlikely that
k.d. will ever stop singing if she can help it. I do wish her to die on stage ( but not until she is at least a hundred years old of course!!!) or right
after a performance, painlessly from a heart attack like Myriam Makeba, Mama Africa did a few days ago. Peace to her soul.

this credit crunch really is starting to take hold. i heard recently that it will probably hit the whole of 2009 and pick up 2010 (UK at least), but that is
definitely not good news for anyone.
I really feel for people/fans who would love to see kd in concert, but just cannot afford to go - that will be why a few venues have been changed recently I
think?
kd unplugged sounds like a good idea
