Hi all,
I have just ordered this film. The critics on Amazon are mixed to say the least, you can well guess I suppose that I care not a hoot about the film and its
merit. It is k.d. I want to see!! Nevertheless, the film is important to me as a fan because she chose to have that small part in it and then I don't
think she would have agreed to be in a film that did not "talk" to her in one way or another. It is with this in mind that I want to see it. Of
course, she has said many times that she did not understand acting and clearly this is only a sort of exploration for her and yet I think with all the
objectivity I can muster, that she is good at acting, perhaps very good. My partner who is not the one to tell me things just to please me ( far from it!)
said more than once after watching Salmonberries and from other things too that she thought her a very good actress. Of course, my partner is not a film
critic and her opinion is just that,an opinion but then she is rather sensitive and can readily " feel" atmospheres and people so I do value her
opinion very much. What do you think of this film and of my adored Salmonberries?

Chantal, "Eye of the Beholder" is a very good film (apart from kd's small role). But then I like Ashley Judd, I like looking at her face and I
also like Ewan McGregor.
So, enjoy kd's small part and then just enjoy the rest of the film.

French-Canadian actress, Geneviève Bujold is also in the film. Another fascinating face to look at.

so, you do that too, manon?
concentrate on the faces of actors?
i often find myself losing the thread of a plot, so absorbed am i in 'reading' the
actor.
and even if a film doesn't have much going for it in terms of plot or acting, there's
usually always something one can learn from or about: the location, the ambience, even the architecture and furnishings. and i love to study the choices the
director made and the camera work.
even a ho-hum film can yield delights.

Thanks Manon,
I know Geneviève Bujold of course. She has always been a favorite of mine. Have you seen her as Anne Boleyn with Richard Burton in Ann of the Thousand days?
She has a presence all her own and yes quite a fascinating face. I remember that at a very young age I used to watch a weekly program for teens called:
" Le Club des Jnobs " for young snobs you know. However it was everything from snob. She was about 18 then and so, cute and full of life and well
had a little something even then that kept you watching her. She too like k.d. chose to live in California a long, long time ago. This has something to do
with our terrible winters for both of them I suppose quite apart for their other professionnal reasons. She must be getting oldish as some of us no doubt by
now. I used to think that it was impossible for her to lose that particular adolescent look but I guess she has finally as most of us.

The critics said it was an incomprehensible mess that just didn't work.
It failed to get a full release in the UK but I remember going to my local cinema one Saturday evening to see it. There were about six other people there
and I wondered whether they might also have come just to see kd.
Her appearances, though far from being great acting as she would be the first to admit came as light relief and kept me there to the end. Had it not been
for her I would have walked out.
What more can I say?
I later rented the video, as a compulsive kd collector and just copied kd's appearances onto my video collection, skipping through the rest.
I also rented Even Cowgirls Get The Blues to see how kd's fabulous soundtrack fitted into that undeserving, awful film.
I also taped Home On The Range from the TV ( kd's A Little Patch Of Heaven) because I thought my grandchildren might like it. No. They understandably
gave up.
I thought she was woefully miscast in The Black Dahlia singing a Marlene Dietrich kind of song with a top hat plonked square on her head. They cut her down
to 60 seconds. Hardly worth the trip to Bulgaria.
kd's forays into the world of cinema have not been the best part of her career. Still, it would be nice to see her in another movie none the less, if
the part was right and the movie was good for once but somehow I doubt it.
She has said she understands singing but not acting. I think that is very honest although I am pleased she had a go.
As far as Salmonberries was concerned, I thought the film was a little too arty in places for my taste but kd was good in that and better than Rosel Zech
who I found rather wooden. I did buy it of course.

And to think that " our " k.d. could have ended up looking like that...Less talent, other circumstances, less will power and the drive to persevere
and less confidence in herself and what she could do plus it must be said some luck. Because you have come a long way baby from southern Alberta. Whatever
happens to you in the future k.d. you have done more in several aspect of your life than even the most dedicated person could wish to do. And I have this
feeling that you have done quite alone in the end even though you have had some help. That you would accept because you are no fool but to remain entirely
yourself and still be in the musical circuit today speak for itself . Hat's off to your dear lady!
Chantal
p.s. did not mean this message to sound like that but there it is...spontaneous hommage....

"i often find myself losing the thread of a plot, so absorbed am i in 'reading' the actor"
Yes. I can relate to that, fruitcake.
I also try to figure out the location by looking at the number plates of cars. Or, for instance, "do I know that
building?"
On the negative side I tend to notice when the continuity dept. has messed up or when the microphone boom can be seen.
But I love going to the cinema.

Chantal- what I like about kd and her acting is her honesty!! In that brilliant Artistdirect Fan Conference in 2000 (on you tube) kd admits that she does not
have the same inate understanding of acting like she does with singing! But at least she tried it!!!
I have only ever watched Salmonberries in lots of short clips via You Tube but what I thought was that in most scenes she was pretty convincing. The only bit
I didn't really like, was the scene when the snowmobile blew up- she needed a bit more help from the script to work with.
She was funny in the 2 episodes of Dharma and Greg though!!

I've never seen a photo from that film Shelley. Thank you. I remember her once describing the part as that of a homophobic born-again Christian in
twin-set and pearls. She said it was perfect casting and then laughed. It's funny to think that that is the same actress as in Salmonberries.

I read somewhere (no, don't ask me where) that when kd was asked about her part in "Eye of the beholder" she said that she rememberd drinking
more than one glass of vodka with Ewan McGregor when they where on the set together.
