Now! My doctor says that it is good to have a mammography done in your early forties ( and whenever necessary if you are much younger and something seems
suspicious) so the xray can be compared to others you will have at yearly intervals after fifty as to try and notice any changes that may occur in the breast
tissues. They talk about calcifications and things like that. Anyway your local Cancer Society or your own doctor will tell you all you need to know. But
please act on it now. One never knows and early detection seems to be the key as Mary Ellen emphasised. Good health to you Mary Ellen and thanks for the
warning.

I really do find the medical industry a bit of a lottery here. Knowing that my mum had a breast removed due to cancer I asked my doctor if I could have a
mamagram. This was whilst in my forties. Iwas told I really needed to have two close relatives that had had cancer before I could get an early screening. I am
now just over 50 and will have to wait until the 'wagon' focuses on my area again which will be when I'm 52. I do check myself but to have the
assurance of a screening would ease the mind. Whose to say if I do find a lump it may be to late. I have therefore decided if such a thing as one comes off,
then they both do. I have had lots of discussions with my mum since her spell and it is that on which I base my decision. I wouldn't want reconstruction
and definitely not implants. Has anyone else had similar experience with their doctor I wonder? I am so glad so many of you here at kf site have had successful
treatment and are still here to enjoy the fun we have together. Caz x

caz, i'm not sure how the n.h.s. works, but can you see another doctor who might be more helpful
in terms of setting you up with a mammogram?

Thanks ladies- it's not called Breast Awareness month for nothing is it- I have realised how this has just been something I have not thought about as I
have not known anyone close who has had to cope with this.
Thanks Fruity for the info on self exams - I haven't even done this- I take on board what Caz has been advised and will check this out with my GP.
Thanks ladies

Ladeeeeez
My grandmother had both removed and two of my aunts had one removed so no surprises that I had the wretched gene. As far as I was told women do not get
the screening until they are 50 (apparantly it can cause changes in young breast tissue). However caz, my daughter has a higher risk of having the gene so she
will be screened in her 40's so I have been told. I felt exactly like you caz if they have to come off so be it. I had a lumpectomy so one is smaller
than the other .....Do I Care
Good health to you maryellen
