Sonnet XLV
I know my mind and I have made my choice;
Not from your temper does my doom depend;
Love me or love me not, you have no voice
In this, which is my portion to the end.
Your presence and your favours, the full part
That you could give, you now can take away;
What lies between your beauty and my heart
Not even you can trouble or betray.
Mistake me not - unto my inmost core
I do desire your kiss upon my mouth;
They have not craved a cup of water more
That bleach upon the deserts of the south;
Here might you bless me; what you cannot do
Is bow me down, who have been loved by you.
Edna St. Vincent Millay

Oh my goodness All4one. Our teacher has set forth a new treasure to bless and edify us.
A poet, I see, who scrapes the depths of our conciousness, articulating wisdom that perhaps has bloomed but not yet spoken...
Know your portion and claim it. Indeed.

Reading about the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City, I found this:
Edna St. Vincent Millay, the first woman to have received the Pulitzer Prize for poetry, has been inducted into the American Poet's Corner at the
Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City, joining literati such as Willa Cather, Langston Hughes, and William Faulkner. Millay is the unofficial
patron saint of activists because of her famous line, "My candle burns at both ends; It will not last the night; But, ah, my foes, and oh, my friends-it
gives a lovely light."
The American Poet's Corner was inspired by the one at Westminster Abbey. The cathedral has been in construction since 1892; they anticipate several more
decades of work on it.

Daniel Haberman was born in New York City in 1933. He attended the Walden School, Carnegie-Mellon University, and the graduate school of New York University. He was educated in the secondhand book shops of Manhattan, and by two years of study with Edward Dahlberg. In 1983 he was asked to create America's Poets' Corner at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine and became the Cathedral's first Poet in Residence. In 1988, he and his wife, pianist Barbara Nissman, left New York to live on a farm in the Allegheny Mountains of West Virginia ; but he continued to serve as an elector to the Poets' Corner until his death in 1991. Thank you, as always for the 'sunshiney' words, fruitcake. ( Don't you like that line I highlighted?

i love the line you highlighted and here's a bit of embroidery: dahlberg's niece, one joyce
dahlberg, attended the college i did. she was a year behind me; very tall, very arty/bohemian looking. striking. and i can tell you that her appearence and
dramatic manner made her rather exceptional at the small college!

My favorite kind of embroidery....
I wonder if she kept the dramatic persona over the years?
I don't want to enter the discussion in the 'girlfriend' thread, but I will say here that the appreciation of thoughtful biography, the abundance
of 'Collected Letters of __ "
- even television shows like the A&E Biography series show our abiding interest in the lives of 'others'. Even fictional stories fascinate.
So I think that simple questions about k.d.s life come from the most natural curiosity.
There's a huge difference between Princess Diana being pursued through the streets of Paris by paparazzi ,and someone on a fan board asking if anyone
has heard what k.d.'s girlfriend has done for a living. (IMHO.

agreed.
as for joyce, i have no idea. i even googled her name, hoping that perhaps she had 'become somebody'.
if she has, i didn't find it. she didn't graduate from s.c., i don't think. i don't recall mention of her in alumni bulletins.
(well, fruitcake, just how often is your name mentioned, hmmm??)
