Love Is Not All ( A Sonnet )
Love is not all: it is not meat nor drink
Nor slumber nor a roof against the rain; Nor yet a floating spar to men that sink And rise and sink and rise and sink again; Love can not fill the thickened lung with breath, Nor clean the blood, nor set the fractured bone; Yet many a man is making friends with death Even as I speak, for lack of love alone. It well may be that in a difficult hour, Pinned down by pain and moaning for release, Or nagged by want past resolution's power, I might be driven to sell your love for peace, Or trade the memory of this night for food. It well may be. I do not think I would. |

There is a comfort in the strength of love;
'Twill make a thing endurable, which else Would overset the brain, or break the heart

For January, I posted a poem with a winter setting and imagery that works well for that month - the month of looking back, and also looking forward.
By February we have moved on a bit, headed toward whatever decisions we made as a result of January's reflection.
February...Valentine's Day . But it isn't always 'hearts and flowers'...
This month I'm under the spell of Brokeback Mountain. I wonder when Jane Siberry wrote Love Is Everything? Read the lyrics after seeing the film. Now
I'll be thinking of Jack and Ennis everytime I hear k.d. sing
Love is everything they said it would be
Love did not hold back the reins But love forgot to make me too blind to see You're chickening out aren't you? You're bangin' on the beach like an old tin drum I cant wait 'til you make The whole kingdom come So I'm leaving
The Millay poem Love Is Not All is also for those fellows.
