fruitcake, thanks for telling me to look here.
I didn't know about her - couldn't find a single volume of her work in the local Borders, either - but found plenty here online . Comparisons to
Emily D. are made by some and dismissed by others.
From the UCLA ( faculty and staff, July 18 ) newsletter:
Her wit and wisdom were invoked in the nationally syndicated comic strip "The Boondocks," with the sage older brother teaching his younger brother a lesson by quoting from Ryan's poem Patience. Ryan gleefully describes discovering her presence in the comic strip while reading the funny pages in bed. "It was just astonishing," she said. "He says, 'You know, a poet named Kay Ryan once said, "Who would have guessed it possible that waiting is sustainable, a place with its own harvests ... or that in time's fullness the diamonds of patience couldn't be distinguished from the genuine in brilliance or hardness." What do you think that means?' Huey asks Riley. Riley answers, 'It means you're a nerd and poetry is stupid.'"
Here's a detail I love: she has taught remedial English at the same community college for more than 30 years. Remedial English...would Emily have had
the patience? |

In her own words-
sonnets, mentors, her seatmates on the plane ride home from the conference - much to enjoy here

oh, hurray!
i've been (semi-patiently) waiting for you to find kay.
she seems a most charming, low-key, self-effacing woman, but also a strong, wise and tender
one.
re teaching esl/remedial english, you will have heard that she makes it a point to separate ryan
the poet from ryan the teacher (my words), as she needs to keep those worlds separate. she attributes a bit of that from having come from modest,
working-class stock; unfrilly, not 'arty'.
in a way this saddens me. i cannot think that she views the writing of poetry as elitist. as our
poet laureate, i believe that one of her functions is to spread the word about all writing, not just poetry, but certainly that, too, and to let everyone
know that reading and writing is not an ivory tower occupation.
anyway, glad you found her. not sure what to make of the e.d. comparisons. i thought so at first but having read more of
her, am now not so sure.
and you?

let's remove the first 'from' and substitute 'to', shall we?
the hair grows apace!
(look, it's kinda late and i'm neuron-challenged)

I couldn't find one any of her works in my interlibrary loan system, either. What samples I've found on line make me like her work - but doesn't it
seem odd she'd rise so high from such obscurity?
I've put her on my wishlist for next time I go to a big used bookstore (like Powells or Logos). Cheryl Share books, share joy! dan, now that's she's been named poet laureate, your library system may get with it.
if they don't soon, why not put in a request that they purchase at least one of her collections?
my library is my lifeline and they are always very good about that.
as for her seeming obscurity, apparently she has been widely published in poetry mags for years.

fruitcake, I seem to be losing my social skills.
I saw the link in poetry hours after you pointed me towards in in a post on the main message board - a prompt I appreciate as I hadn't been visiting the
poetrythread lately.
My reply came after some days of prowling in Google ( reading )and the local *Borders ( being disappointed ) . Today I have to go to a course ( 8 AM - 6:15 )
and you know at moments during the day I'll wish to be continuing my hunt . ( I know I could find one online but that would be too easy.
I did buy something in Borders - funny little book called Things White People Like

Oh, it makes me smile - and laugh aloud, too.
Example: Farmer's Markets make the list.
Their instincts are so strong that if you release one into a farmer's market it will return to you with a reusable canvas bag filled with fruits and
vegetables.
And you'll not be surprisewd to know that #1 on the list is coffee.

I just read an article ( Atlantic Monthly, 07/08 ) titled Is Google Making Us Stupid?
Kay Ryan has expressed the need for quiet in her life and I imagine she would agree with this:
Then again, the Net isn't the alphabet, and although it may replace the printing press, it produces something altogether different. The kind of deep
reading that a sequence of printed pages promotes is valuable not just for the knowledge we acquire from the author's words but for the intellectual
vibrations those words set off within our own minds. In the quiet spaces opened up by the sustained, undistracted reading of a book, or by any other act of
contemplation, for that matter, we make our own associations, draw our own inferences and analogies, foster our own ideas. Deep reading, as Maryanne Wolf
argues, is indistinguishable from deep thinking.
If we lose those quiet spaces, or fill them up with "content," we will sacrifice something important not only in our selves but in our culture. That's why I want the actual book of poetry. It's a different experience. |

donna, i'm so glad you've read this article!
it's a beauty, isn't it? so much to chew on. (actually, the entire issue is very good.
the atlantic is a venerable new england tradition).
the quiet spaces are crucial. they make all the difference.
as far as a book goes, there is nothing to compare, imo. i'm kinda tempted by kindle, but
really, no.
to hold a volume in one's hands. to notice the font and paper and design. to read and savour and
drift away in one's own thoughts and then to return to the friend you are holding. put it in your backpack. by your bed. on the table next to you as you
eat. and, finally, if you like, to send it on to a kindred soul. ah, a blessed book.
(p.s. i think kd would love your farmer's market quote!

I wonder if soujourner has seen it? She's in a book club and the other members would probably enjoy it.
Do you sense those changes in yourself, fruitcake? I feel warned, because I have certainly started being with the computer more than with books and
do some of those behaviors described.

she has seen the article, donna.
and yes, i do, a bit. lately i've gotten lost in several good reads and the experience has
reminded me that there is nothing to compare with the sensuality and intimacy of holding a book and diving in. however, i'd be lost sans my toy. need
'em both!
