thank you shelley!
there we go. first of all i'd like to introduce some of the software helpers i use to enhance my kd collection. my tool of choice for preserving videos from youtube is free youtube download. it's very easy to use and allows you to convert the videos while downloading into a more appropriate format than flash video (.flv). quality is adjustable. and it's freeware. the same company offers free youtube to mp3 converter. the name tells it all. very good to extract the music from any youtube video and safe it to your hard drive. quality settings adjustable. free of course. what's the software you guys use?

This is a fine and useful idea for a thread. Thank you to dragon and The Guvnor.
I note your recommendations with interest, dragon. These are pc related solutions and those of us who use Macs have evolved, out of necessity, a different approach to digital harvesting of langiana on the internet. RealPlayer finally caught up with OSX and I recommend the RealPlayer Downloader for nabbing live action from YouTube to enjoy again in the solitary small hours of winter insomnia. On set-up you can specify which file format you want to use and it converts files to iPods and iPhones easily : http://uk.real.com/realplayer/mac It took me approximately thirty years longer than the rest of the planet to realise that it was possible to convert videofile to mp3. Please stop laughing - mocking the elderly is unseemly. Langlust apparently makes it easy in overcoming issues of personal morality regarding the questionable legality of file downloads. To snag (for example) the magnificent Wounded in all the Right Places from YouTube, this is a good option. It's very fast on the Mac and apparently also works with pcs : http://www.youtube-mp3.org/ |

Another possibility for youtube and a few other supported sites is clipgrab (http://clipgrab.de/start_en.html). It works with Mac and - as I've seen now - also with Linux and Windows. Several converter are availible and handling is quite easy.

...to see all these new programs introduced!
as for me i must beg you to forgive me for once and for all right here & now: i'm not into the mac world. so sadly enough my recommendations will be microsoft related - except if i have something that works cross platform. i will of course indicate that. thanx for participating, ladies

I think that the thin line is rather between clever people
and those who are to lazy in trying to understand how a pc is "thinking".
Since nearly 3 years I belong to the latter and my life just gets easier |

Hi liv. Apple owners tend to be zealots and sometimes bore their pc using friends with exaggerated tales of how superior Macs are - which is what I was poking fun at above in response to dragon's teasing ! I use both platforms, work demands it. But, like you I find the interface is just easier on a Mac. And they are beautifully designed, which is a bonus.

The YouTube downloader I use is:
http://youtubedownload.altervista.org You drag the YouTube address into it and off you go, Then you click on, Convert Previously Downloaded file, drag that over from where you have stored the YouTube and you can easily then have a second one downloaded not as an MP4 to view on the monitor but also as an MP3 to burn onto a CD disc. Is that legal? We have a couple of lawyers here who I hope will defend me when I'm arrested. The tricky part then is to convert the original MP4 video into a format that can be saved not just as Data to be viewed on a computer but as a DVD Video to be viewed on TV. That I think can not be done with a simple converted and needs to be done using Windows Movie Maker or the Mac equivalent. At least that's what I have always done but if there is a quicker, easy way I would be grateful to hear it. |

Livingston, "fever" can be used for "madness", "craziness" and is a useful word to describe our state of mind at certain times of kd activity.
