The other day a British poll was published which had asked 50,000 what they thought were the greatest inventions of modern times that had changed the way we
live. Oddly, X-Rays came out top although the invention of electricity that made X-Rays and so much else possible was not mentioned.
What would be your Top Ten?
Here are mine.
1)The Steam Engine ( originally patented by Thomas Savery in 1698 but improved to be reliable by James Watt.) Without that single invention there would have been no Industrial Revolution which produced a torrent of new ideas and inventions from then on.
2)Electricity
3)Louis Pasteur's discovery that infection is caused by micro-organisms and using that knowledge to produce a vaccine against Rabies ( Not the first vaccine, that was against Smallpox, but the first that came from an understanding of the cause of infection)
4) Penicillin
5) Anaesthetics
6) The Internal Combustion Engine
7) Radio
8) Television
9) The Computer
10) Satellites for navigation and communication
