INTERVIEW WITH KD LANGDuring her recent trip to Vancouver for the Fashion Cares AIDS benefit kd took the time to sit down with journalise Virginia Leeming to talk about AIDS, her lipstick and the politically correct. The Vancouver Sun kindly granted us permission to reprint the interview that appeared in the Style section of the newspaper on November 24, 1998. Canadian singing sensation kd lang visited Vancouver briefly on Nov 13 to open the MAC cosmetics show to raise money for local AIDS charities. Before the event, she agreed to briefly discuss her involvement as a spokesperson for the Toronto-based cosmetics company. Dressed in black from head to toe, with a few straggly locks hanging, almost Elvis-style, on her face, she appeared to be wearing barely a brush of lipstick. Her handshake is a grip with strength. VL: Do you have any idea how much money your particular lipstick colour (which is Viva Glam II, a pink shade) has earned?" Kd: About four million. It raised a million really quickly when it first came out and that was like a year ago, so I think it's about four million now. But altogether Viva Glam I (drag queen RuPaul's fundraising red lip colour) and II, with Kids Helping Kids cars (card featuring drawings by children who are HIV positive), have raised over 15 million." (The money raised goes to local AIDS charities). I probably can't think of an original question that you haven't heard before as a spokesperson for MAC AIDS funs, but was there a special reason you got involved in the first place with MAC? Yeah, well you know, like there's a lot of organisations looking for a celebrity spokesperson. Really, because of a lot of different parallels in our values. They are Canadian, they were the first company not to test on animals, they recycle, they're kinda pc and I try to keep concerned with that. But also because of their really strong commitment to AIDS. And 15 million dollars (raised for HIV/AIDS programs) for a cosmetic company, plus they have a black drag queen for their first spokesperson and a lesbian for their second, that's pretty cool. You're not a lipstick lesbian are you. Yes, I'm a professional lipstick lesbian. Not a practicing one, but a professional one. I understand you have beautiful skin. Can you tell me, is that genetic or does it come from creams? I'm Canadian; ever looked at Canadian skin? It's really beautiful. My mother has astonishing skin. So it isn't always the creams you put on? No, no, it's genetics and water So you lead a pretty healthy lifestyle? Pretty healthy. I've been slippin' a little bit lately, because I took a year off. That's good. I needed it. Would you like to add anything to our interview? Well, I guess my whole purpose of being here is to raise awareness and to raise money. You know the fight against AIDS is definitely not over. Far from it. If people abandon an issue after it has lost its glamour, it's still something that we have to fight against. I don't think we have seen the full brunt of it yet. Especially in continents like Africa. Yeah, especially when you get statistics like one in four people in Kenya. The next day, kd and Phillip Ing, MAC's artistic director, hopped on a plane bound for Sydney, Australia, where more stores are being opened, and to bring their AIDS awareness to the land of Oz. |

In Recent Weeks
k.d. has been busy doing work for MAC's AIDS Fund. On October 24th she was at Nashville Cares in
Tennessee and on November 13th she performed at Fashion Cares in Vancouver, BC. The morning after Fashion Cares it was off to Australia for a week to attend
the openings of the new MAC shops in Sydney on the 17th and in Melbourne on the 19th. k.d.'s VivaGlam 2 lipstick is now available in Australia at these
stores and don't forget, every penny from the sale of this lipstick goes to AIDS charities in the area the lipstick was sold. VivaGlam lipsticks have now
raised over $15 million for local charities!
Bits and Pieces
A while back k.d. recorded a song for Expo '98 in Portugal and now her interpretation of that fado is available on CD. 'Fado
Hilario' is included on 'Red Hot & Lisbon' from Movieplay Portugesa S.A. Also in Portugal, k.d.'s 'Black Coffee' is to be
included on a CD tentatively titled 'A Menina Danca-Jazz Classics 3'.
For those of you who tuned into The Roseanne Show on Friday, September 25th, expecting to see k.d. we have an explanation. k.d. actually
taped the show on that day but it didn't air until Monday, October 5th, in North America and even later in Australia and the UK. As the show was so new
at the time even the producers weren't sure when that eposide would air until the Friday before it did. In spite of admitting that she was nervous as it
had been a long time since she was on tv, k.d. looked and acted completely relaxed. k.d.'s charming sense of humour was evident during both the interview
and the cooking segments of the show and her voice was in fine form when she performed 'Right To Love'.
The sitcome 'Clueless' has apparently obtained the rights to use k.d.'s version of 'Smoke Rings' and/or 'My Last
Cigarette' and/or 'Smoke Dreams' for an upcoming episode.
Australians still looking for a copy of k.d.'s 'Ridin' the Rails' will soon be in luck. k.d. has agreed to have the song
included on a CD tentatively titled 'ABC Radio Airplay'.
The Murmours have re-released their CD 'Blender' which contains five k.d. produced songs. The record has received great reviews
as has the band's rocking live show!

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
Obvious Gossip Member (hundreds of you): Has k.d. retired?
David M: Many of you seem to have that impression but no, she has not. She has taken a lot of time off, as I
explained in the last OG, but she will be back. k.d.'s time off will seem longer to us because even though she is experimenting in the studio and has
started writing new material it will be months, or even longer, before any new project is completed.
OGM: Will OG still send out flyers offering new merchandise?
DM: Actually there are no plans to produce new merchandise at this time so there won't be any more
flyers. I believe that merchandise from future tours will be offered through www.kdlang.com and a wide selection of our present
merchandise is still available through there.
OGM: Can I still use OG's post office box to write to k.d. or order merchandise?
DM: Yes, the PO Box will remain open and the web site will be active but the fax line will be shut off on Jan
15, 1999.
OGM: As you have a web site is there an e-mail address I can email OG or, preferably, k.d.
directly?
DM: Sorry, but no, there isn't. We tried having an e-mail address years ago but it got so busy that there
was no way to keep up with all the mail. Web customers receive an emailed confirmation of order notice so if you have questions you can simply push reply.
Only enquiries about orders please!
Thank you!
Over the past few months I have received many very kind letters from OG members. Thank you very much to all
who sent cards, etc - they were greatly appreciated! I wish you all health and happiness and, who knows, maybe our paths will cross again at future k.d.
concerts. Happy New Year to all of you!
Sincerely, David |
