A *hot 30* Minutes in a Hotel Room with kd lang By Nic McClure

Nic McClure aka Nic Van Dyke, is a lesbian radio producer and on-air character heard around Australia on the Hot 30 countdown. After spinning the 'wheel of misfortune' her task was to get a tattoo on the air. Nic's reward from the Hot 30 team for doing this: 25 minutes with kd lang at her hotel! Accompanied by Hot 30s mischievous 'Donkey Schlong' here's how Nic handled the situation:

kd: Nic Van Dyke, meet another dyke. No, but listen I wanna see your tattoo, pull your pants down.
Nic: No, you can wait.
kd: Turn around.
Nic: No, you can wait. Maybe you can rub my cream into it later on.
kd: Ok.
Nic: It's a pleasure to meet you. I believe your new album Invincible Summer has debuted at No 5 here in Australia.
kd: Yippee
Nic: I've been listening to it over the weekend. I love it. They're 11 great tracks. How do you choose the first single?
kd: I usually don't choose the single but this is the first record where I have, and I chose Summerfling cause I really felt like it represented the whole theme of the record.
Nic: Do you write a specific song with the intention of that being the single or is it just a marketing tool for you?
kd: On this record I did write more with radio in mind, sort of old-school pop song writing - just really concise, clean arrangements. But no, I don't really write one specific song as the single.
Nic: One of my all time favourite tracks of yours is Outside Myself and just the way the song opens - "a thin ice covers my soul". Now that is a very different place to be from Summerfling.
Donkey: I don't quite know how that song goes. Sing a little bit, Nic.
Nic: No way. I'll show my tatt but I won't sing in front of kd lang.
kd: (sings) "I've been outside myself for so long".
Donkey: Now she's lost for words.
kd: Ok, now pull those pants down and let me see.
Donkey: It's her favourite song and you've just sung it to her and looked in her eyes. Coming here in the cab Nic told me she used to have the biggest crush on you.
kd: Used to. Oh, I don't like that "used to" part.
Nic: So what happened between Outside Myself and Summerfling?
kd: Ingenue itself means the youthful sort of naive artist and to me Invincible Summer means maturing; the evolution and the ripening of me as an artist. You know, I've survived the ups and downs of the music business for 17 years and I burnt out, took time off and fell in love with music again. So I feel youthful again and reinvigorated and summer to me represents that. As you look back at photo albums or snapshots of your high school yearbook you have to appreciate where you were but you also have to appreciate the evolution of yourself.
Nic: Do you still think that pain creates great art then?
kd: I do think pain creates great art but I don't think it's the only place that it's found. I also think happiness is a great motivator, too.
Nic: You've said that this whole album deals with how love makes everything different. How has your life changed then?
kd: Well, I think I'm more open and I appreciate people in general more because I am more calm inside. I think with age, too, I'm a little bit older than I used to be, obviously. (laugh) I just think I'm more mellow and I think I'm more accessible to people. I just love people more.
Nic: But what is it that you get now that you didn't get before?
kd: I guess kind of an anchor. I think I gave everything to my music before and now my music is my job. Music's a part of my life but it's not everything. Now my dog and cooking and hanging at home are just as important, so I have a nice balance.
Nic: Is that your measurement now - the small, simple things in life?
kd: The funny thing is I never really had the small, simple things in life because being on the road for 15 years as I was making records and touring and making records and touring, the luxury of simple things, of everyday things I didn't know. So I think now that I know them has sort of changed everything, my perspective and my priorities.
Nic: Thank goodness you're not a Taurean. I could not have lived that lifestyle. I need my home base.
kd: You're a Taurus? You know what, all my best friends are Taureans cause I'm a Scorpio, we're like the perfect...(damn she didn't finish that line!)
Nic: I read somewhere that you used to consider yourself part of a music elite. So did you consciously exclude yourself from the mainstream?
kd: I consciously made records that were challenging, that were hybrids and high-contrasting styles and I made records as difficult for the record company to sell as possible. Like Drag is a good example or Even Cowgirls Get the Blues. Now I think that I've realised the power of the gift that I have which is singing and I think it's a beautiful way to touch people and communicate with people. So to me the importance isn't about how clever I am. It's about how real I am and that's a big
difference.
Nic: You wrote a lot of this album at the beach. Is there anywhere special you like to write?
kd: I have a loft in LA in Hollywood and it's a great study of human nature and I go there and hang out and paint and write. It overlooks Hollywood Boulevard. I have binoculars so I can pick up on a lot of things going on. It's my creative space.
Nic: You've recently renovated your home. Do you have a favourite room in the new house?
kd: Yeah, probably the kitchen. I spend a lot of time in the kitchen cause it's kind of the most open and everyone sort of just hangs around in the kitchen cause it overlooks the yard and is very open and airy.
Donkey: And we're getting close to the stage where we're going to show you Nic Van Dyke's tattoo.
kd: Fantastic, I'm feeling good about it. How are you feeling Nic? Are you feeling good about it?
Nic: Well, my palms are a bit sweaty but I'm feeling OK.
Nic: OK. We'll do a quick kd lang profile first. Ten questions. What is the one thing you'd most like to change about the world?
kd: Give it a good dose of compassion.
Nic: What's the one thing you have the highest hope of obtaining in your life?
kd: Longevity.
Nic: What's the most difficult problem you've had to solve?
kd: Just the problem of me. Probably my brain is the biggest problem.
Nic: What's the hardest thing about love?
kd: Keeping your brain out of it, just going with the flow.
Nic: What has been the best year of your life so far?
kd: You know, boy they're all great, but the one that sticks out for me was 1971, the day my dad bought home my very first motorcycle. It was the spring, June or May.
Nic: You know I was born in May 1971. I should have been that motorcycle.
kd: Well, I rode it for a loooooooong time (laughter).
Nic: What was the biggest risk that you've ever taken?
kd: Probably coming out was one of the biggest risks I've ever taken, career wise.
Nic: What do you have the worst reputation for?
kd: Flirting
Nic: And the best?
kd: Flirting
Nic: What place are you most tranquil in?
kd: Home, or the water.
Nic: Do you think life gets tougher as you go on?
kd: No. I think it gets better and it gets clearer. Age is beautiful, the surrender of age is beautiful.
Nic: Do relationships get easier?
kd: First of all you have to be in love with yourself to be in love with someone else. Until that work's done you're not going to get it. It's a lot of work. Look in the mirror. You have to understand what your weaknesses are and accept them and understand your strong points, and everyone has them and don't be afraid to acknowledge your weaknesses.
Donkey: Alright, off the serious shit. Tattoos. You wanna see it?
kd: Yeah, I do, I do.
(Nic shows her tattoo)
kd: How old is it?
Nic: Friday (4 days)
kd: Did it hurt?
Nic: The initial outline hurt but then the guy must have rested the machine on the chair so it was vibrating the whole time.
kd: Oooh, that sounds really good.
Nic: Yeah. So I was getting really turned on, the pain had gone and I was just having a great time.
kd: (laugh) Yeah, no kidding. Wanna see mine?
Nic: Yeah, I'd love to
(kd shows tattoo of an anchor on her right upper arm)
kd: The simple, quintessential tattoo.
Nic: How long have you had it for?
kd: I got it during All You Can Eat, so 1996 maybe?
Nic: So you've only got one?
kd: I made a promise to myself to only get one tattoo because I think you can go crazy and even having one is a bit dodgy cause it's an impulsive thing and then when you're older you think, why did I ever do this?
Nic: But there's also that adrenaline rush.
kd: Oh, you get high from it, absolutely.
Donkey: Well, the tattoo is only fresh, as you probably noticed when you saw it.
kd: Yeah, I touched it.
Donkey: Nic has to rub this healing cream in. Would you do it?
kd: Yeah, I'll do it. See, this is one of the perks of being in the music business.
Nic: Would you sing to me while you do it?
kd: Sure. What would you like me to sing?
Nic: "It's happening with you".
(kd rubs cream in and sings in Nic's ear)
kd: It's a beautiful tattoo, I really love the colour of it.
Nic: I hope it doesn't fade too much.
kd: It does fade. I hate to tell you.
Donkey: Do you guys want me to leave?
Nic and kd: Yes.
Donkey: Call me when you're ready.
Nic: OK, bye.
kd: Bye....
(kd and Nic laughter)
