HOW I GOT THAT LOOK
LANG LOOSE
k.d. lang's new cd - along with her wardrobe - is about to go into heavy rotation.
By James Servin
Q. You've worn everything from western wear to ballgowns. With your new cd, Invincible Summer, you're dressing
in linen. Which comes first, the look or the music?
A. I don't try to create an image for each project. It's just an expression of what music I'm into. I recently moved to California, where
I've been going to the beach a lot, so that influenced me. I've been wearing gauzy linen, Dolce & Gabanna, even white T-shirts from Kmart.
I have a feeling that I'm rebelling against the whole music-in-fashion idea.
Q. Are you planning any costumes for the new tour?
A. There's going to be a lot of white, a lot of yellow, and a lot of of orange. the yellow chiffon gown [of her "Miss
Chatelaine" character] will probably also make an appearance.
Q. Was the "Miss Chatelaine" look a revelation for you?
A. It was the first time I had done anything like that. I had a blast, but good lord, I can't believe what people go through - the hair, the
nails, the lashes, the makeup, the shoes.
Q. Do you work out so you look good in those costumes?
A. When I'm writing, I tend to get more into the booze and the dolls and let myself go. But when I'm going into performance mode, there's
always a bit of a panic because I have to shed about 30 pounds. Then I work out six days a week.
Q. I know you're not a big makeup person, but what kind do you wear when performing?
A. I'm a M.A.C. girl. My mother once told me, "You have nice skin, you don't need to wear makeup." I have thin lips, so it's
best to downplay them. Anything more looks like a drag queen.
Q. There's a story about Madonna whipping out lipstick and applying it to your mouth. Does she still try to get you
wear it?
A. No. In fact, under my influence, she's wearing less makeup. I think I could even get her into a pair of Birkenstocks at this point.
Q. When you were in Nashville, they wanted to take a curling iron to your hair. How do you feel about the commentary
regarding your look?
A. Because I'm a tomboy, it's always been an issue. I'm mostly oblivious to it at this point. In some ways, I really get off on it,
because it gives me something to play off with.
Q. You once cut your hair so close it left bald spots. Then you stepped onstage and performed.
A. That was very liberating. Yeah, I looked terrible, but it was a great feeling. I do recommend it for the soul. I don't recomment it for
the ego.
