10/27/09 04:18:39	Tags : None http://www.cbc.ca/health/story/2009/10/25/vaccine-campaign.html Are you getting the H1N1 vaccine? Are you in the high risk group to get Swine Flu? Are you a caregiver for someone who is in the high risk group? Do you usually get a flu shot? I plan on getting it tomorrow, but really nervous. Decided the benefit outweighs the risk of not getting it though, as I have asthma. I would prefer to go live somewhere away from all people until June, but that is not possible.

I got the kids vaccinated though, after witnessing what happened to a friend's 5 year old son who had no underlying health condition. This is what the poor kid has gone through the last three weeks: kidney and liver failure phenomonia so severe that one of his lungs collapsed put on a machine that functioned for his heart and lungs 2 strokes several surgeries trouble getting his blood pressure normal all kinds of complications from all the tubes that were in his throat Luckily, he is finally starting to recover but it was real touch and go there for a while, and now because of the strokes he is going to have to go through god knows how much OT, and PT! And on top of all that they get to worry about the hospital bills which I'm sure will be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. They have insurance but it won't cover it all (good ole American healthcare system, eh?)! So.......do I feel like going through all that? That would be a NO! They got the nasal mist last week and so far, no side effects. It's a good idea to get vaccinated, it's a NASTY little bug!!!

10/27/09 12:49:42	vigilceo, what a harrowing story! that dear child! one can hardly imagine the heartache his parents are suffering. as for the h1n1 jab, i would certainly get one, however the stuff is not yet available where i am. i've just had the seasonal vaccine with no after-effects, but that is useless against the h1n1 version, apparently. a kind of triage system has been put in place for the distribution of the h1n1 vaccine and i'm well down on the list. so, when not washing my hands, i'm crossing my fingers! good for you, deb, and good health to all.

10/27/09 16:46:42	That is indeed a terrifying report, Deb. For any person having to go through that it is bad enough, but this must be horrific for the parents of a 5-year old child. That goodness the little toddler is on the mend. The vaccine has been causing quite a discussion here in Germany. It has been reported that medical personnel, police and fire personnel as well as government officials will be receiving a vaccine which has less side effects than that which is to be provided to the general public. This has been causing quite a comotion and the willingness to be vaccinated is not very high. I have decided not to be vaccinated. I am not in a high risk category and the one time I had a seasonal flu vaccine (about 25 years ago) I had the most awful case of flu. I have never had one since. I should maybe say that the swine flu epidemic here is not nearly as widespread as in the UK and the USA, maybe that is why so many people are reluctant to be vaccinated.

10/27/09 23:46:02	That poor child's experience is grim indeed but he may well not have been in a high risk category for immunisation although children under six are especially vulnerable. The odd thing about this virus is it seems to be a greater danger to people not normally at great risk from flu, namely the young and fit. It also appears that the risk of side effects of antiviral medication in children might outweigh the benefits. It is so difficult to know what to do where an infection is mild for most people and lethal for a few. I will get the vaccine as front line medical personnel need to be protected. I worry about the work load if this thing really gets going and whether hospitals will be able to cope. The more people who are vaccinated the better, I would have thought. As for the American so-called Health System, the only one in the entire Developed World that does not provide fully for all its citizens......it beggars belief! A number of Americans equal to the total population of Great Britain either have no medical cover or inadequate cover. In every other country health provision is as fundamental a human right as universal education. In America it seems that gun ownership is more important! Dear oh dear! We didn't get them were turned away. There was a long line up outside the clinic. We waited for about an hour when security came and told us there were 200 people inside and no tome for all of us. Us being a line about a block long. There was a young pregnant woman with twins about 18 months crying because they wouldn't let them in. She also butted in ahead of us while I had my back turned but I let it go, as I understand her pregnant hormones and fear for her children probably made her panicky. Other people began to argue with security and the nurse too. So we will go again to get them. There will be several new clinic open tomorrow so the load won't be so heavy on the only 2 that were open this week in the area.

10/29/09 11:43:49	We are very lucky in Australia that enough doses of the swine flu vax have been provided for the entire population of everyone over 10 years of age, free of charge. I had the flu when I was in my late 30s and never got better. I saw many specialists and was advised that I probably had a virus which had 'piggy backed' onto the flu virus. My health issues have stabilised over the years and I am feeling good but every year I routinely have a flu vax. Every night on TV for weeks over recent times, the doctor in charge of the State Communicable Diseases Unit has been encouraging all local people aged over 10 to go and have a swine flu vax. He has gone on record as saying that it is possible that everyone might catch this dreadful disease which is highly contagious and is affecting people in different ways. I know a number of people who have had the swine flu and they were all extremely ill for periods of time varying from a week to months. I went and had a chat with a doctor and he advised me to have a vaccination which I did two weeks ago. I had a small reaction to the vax but nothing serious. Several hundred people in Australia have died from this disease which is still prevalent here, even though our winter has now finished. But we now have the problem of infected Aussies leaving to holiday overseas who will infect those populations along with healthy Aussies visiting your side of the world, becoming infected and bringing it back here again. Remember, this is a highly contagious disease. I would recommend all of you, no matter which country you live in, to have the vaccination. It could possibly saved your life.

Even if there is enough vaccine for everyone free of charge, it is important to priorities those most at risk first and not just have a first come first served until the supply runs out that day.

Agreed! That is why I let it go. I even said, "Oh, you are pregnant, that's ok then" to her. I felt since she was the ONLY one crying, pregnant and with twin 18 month olds, the security guard could have let them in. She was obviously terrified.

10/31/09 21:33:31	I am in the high risk group because of my pregnancy and I am due to get the shot on Thursday. I am nervous cause there has been all kinds of rumours going around and some health workers are not taking it which makes one think why. If it were just me I wouldn't be that worried because I don't have any major health issues and I am rather young. But because of the baby I am not taking any risks by listening well meaning neighbour over a healthcare proffessional. I have a doctor's appointment next week. I'll ask him about the risks and all that, but only reason why I wouldn't take the vaccine if it were dangerous for the baby. But if it's other then that I am taking it. 11/01/09 00:07:49	Thanks Soozie. My son didn't even get dizzy or a head ache, just a sore arm. Sore arms are pretty common with any shots I find. Meriah, I would do the same as you plan on doing. I am concerned hearing some medical personals are not receiving it, they could pass the flu onto others. My friends teenaged daughter may have H1N1. They have not had her tested yet, they tried, but the clinic waiting room was full and over flowing outside for several blocks and she felt too sick to wait in the hospital waiting room all night. Because her fever is not sky high and she can breath ok they told her to stay home. Her work however, oh this makes me so mad,,,she works at Subway Sub, they are mad she called in sick and told her SHE has to find someone to cover her! Unbelievable! Her friend has Swine Flu, and several students in her high school. There is one case at my sons college, that we know of.

11/01/09 00:47:36	meriah, i can well understand your hesitancy. as has been said, your pregnancy puts you at the head of the queue for the vax. apparently there is some feeling that the vax without the additive (adjuvant) is safer than the one with it. however, the one with the adjuvant seems to be the one which is available now, so many pregnant woman are choosing to take it, just to have it done with. you're very wise to talk it over with your doctor. please let us know how you go. our best wishes to your and your baby.

11/01/09 01:04:12	It is very very confusing. Here in the UK, the seasonal vaccine is being given now but the H1N1 is not going to be available until mid-November. Supplies will almost certainly run out. The fact that there are two different types is confusing everyone. I guess different areas vary.
