What we are seeing now in Tibet is just the tip of the iceberg. I do not think my generation really even knows the extent of what has happened to the Tibetan
people. It is like a Band-Aid that has been ripped off to reveal that the wound is still raw.

It is unfortunate the Olympic Games are being impacted by this situation, but it presents a rare opportunity to bring focus to the heart-breaking situation
of the Tibetan and Chinese people who have suffered serious human rights abuses. Oppression should be stopped.

Of course, the most important thing is the voice. Even if you don't like a single song k. d. lang has written or covered in her 25-year career, you just
can't argue with that sound she can make: the purity of it, the way it cracks open and fills out. That is what made it possible for her to achieve
eminence in country music in her twenties and what prompted Roy Orbison to invite her to sing a duet of "Crying" with him in 1987. But that is not
the only thing that made lang wildly famous-the first lesbian superstar-when the eighties gave way to the nineties.

Wholesome, endearing, strident and polemical, she has a golden voice that could fill the Grand Canyon. So could some of her opinions. Quiet but not shy, she

"How can you place human life above every other form of life?" she said during an interview, still clearly astonished by a choice millions would

I've always compared Roy Orbison to a tree: passive and beautiful yet extremely solid. He maintained a sense of humility and sensitivity and gentleness

He broke the mold of the Fifties tough-guy thing, and even the style of his music was a kind of fine art for somebody from Wink, Texas. It was cosmopolitan

  K. D. LANG comes on strong. She started her set Monday at the Bottom Line with a torchy ballad, leaning over the electric piano and emoting in throbbing,

As her band, the Reclines, shifted into honky-tonk tempos, Ms. Lang moved to center stage and turned into a belter - by turns Hollywood cowgirl, rockabilly

Here's a journalist's tip for you: A good way to break the ice with k.d. lang when you're going to interview her, is to tell her that you
listened to her new record all weekend while you were cleaning house. For some reason, if you're calling up the Grammy-winning world-renowned
chanteuse/cowgirl/vegetarian popstar (who just happens to be one of the most famous lesbians on the planet) to ask her questions about her new album,
Reintarnation, and this innocuous bit of information gets relayed, she laughs and becomes super-relaxed and comments affably: "I bet you were cleaning
  really fast!"
And then you'll both crack up because she's right. Need to charge your engine and get zipping around the...

I discovered Ryuichi from the soundtrack of The Sheltering Sky. His sense of melody is beyond divine. It's so challenging - as a singer I'd love to
sink my teeth into his melody.

I saw his show in Los Angeles where I discovered he also has a tremendous rhythmic thing: a nonstop hypnotic, but intricate, syncopated piece. He uses the
industrialised piano, which John Cage invented, where objects are placed on the strings to give different overtones and textures. It's genius to witness
  - I'd never seen that before. Another thing you'll notice is that the set is very minimal and dreamy.

We've not recorded together, although he did ask me to work on a previous opera. Sadly I was in the studio - but I'd love to collaborate in the
future just to go into his world. I don't know what I'd do exactly, but that's good. He'd stretch...

that night, I left hooked on her music and on her incredible live performances. Reintarnation is her new CD, it looks back at the music she produced in the
first ten years of her career, from her early cowpunk beginnings in Canada to her much acclaimed work with Owen Bradley in Nashville. She joins me...

The prospect of meeting k.d. lang is nerve-racking. It's lunchtime and she wants to meet at my house.

But she is a passionate cook and a vegetarian, possibly even a vegan, and the best I can offer her is a spread from my local supermarket salad bar. The
throaty roar of a Harley-Davidson heralds her arrival, and when she dismounts I note that she is wearing masculine jeans and her very feminine face has the
most delicate, peachy skin. She is charming, smiley and sweet 'Did I disturb your lunch?' she asks, looking at the Middle East-themed smorgasbord I
  have prepared. 'No,...
